Abstract

Nowadays, more and more companies design projects aimed to automate or digitalize internal processes in order to create competitive advantages. In this regard, we need to assess such not market-oriented projects. The goal of this article is to propose a new flexible tool for projects portfolio evaluation. For these purposes, we suggest adapting BCG matrix. As the most adequate criteria for the evaluation of internal projects, it is proposed to use an ‘integrated indicator of project survival’ (an internal demand for each project, the implementation by key users, promotion by management, the level of functional development). It is also necessary to take into account the costs of selected projects and the effect that we expect them to get. We can combine these two criteria by efficiency indicator. As a result, methods of calculation of the specified criteria for project evaluation, lying in the coordinate axes, are proposed. Barrier values that indicate the transition of the project from one category to another are also offered. It is important to pay attention to the fact that such values may differ for different companies depending on the specifics of the project or activity. Besides, management requirements are also important. The article provides an example of the project portfolio analysis aimed at digitalization of internal processes, using the proposed tool based on the initial data of one of the industrial enterprises located in Tomsk (Russia).

Keywords: BCG matrix; tool modification; project assessment; project portfolio; project.
